The Healing Tree Foundation and Kindness Cure Campaign team is composed of highly enthusiastic and committed individuals with extensive experience in nonprofit and fiscal management, fundraising, marketing and public relations, web mastery, and audio/visual. A brief bio follows for each. Additional support for web development and marketing/PR is being provided by outside firms.
CJ Scarlet, M.A., CCP
President, The Healing Tree Foundation
Founder, the Kindness Cure Campaign
CJ Scarlet is President of The Healing Tree Foundation and founder of the Kindness Cure Campaign, as well as an author, motivational speaker and certified life transitions coach. CJ has worked as a volunteer, board member, and employee of several nonprofit organizations, including United Way, American Red Cross, and Kids First, Inc., where she served as Executive Director. Most recently, she was the Developmental Officer for the RCI Foundation.
CJ is an award-winning photojournalist and editor with twenty-nine years of marketing, public relations, and professional writing experience, and has given speeches and workshops at state, national, and international events. As Director of Victim Issues for the North Carolina Attorney General's Office, CJ initiated and co-chaired the nation's first Statewide Automated Victim Notification System, which saves lives by ensuring victims are automatically notified when their perpetrators are released from custody. This program was selected as the national model by the U.S. Department of Justice and received several national awards.
CJ has appeared on numerous radio and television programs, and was a media spokesperson while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. She has served on a number of boards and commissions, including the National Victims Constitutional Amendment Network and the North Carolina Governor's Advisory Commission on Military Affairs. She was chosen as Honor Graduate of her platoon in Marine Corps bootcamp and was named Outstanding Young Careerist by the Business & Professional Women's Club in her region. CJ is a member of the International Coaching Federation, and serves on the board of directors of the Greater Raleigh Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners.
Wesley H. Walters
Treasurer, The Healing Tree Foundation
Wes Walters is the Grants Management and Fiscal Director of the Governor's Crime Commission, a division of the North Carolina Department of Crime Control & Public Safety. He is responsible for administering approximately $80 million of active federal funds from the U.S. Department of Justice that is allocated to the State of North Carolina. Wes ensures all grants meet programmatic and fiscal compliance standards, and processes payments to grantees.
Wes was responsible for the design and development of the automated Grants Management System, which has become a model for other states. He also plans and facilitates the Program Development and Grant Writing workshops that are attended by over 1,000 prospective applicants. Wes was the eighth person in the country to graduate from the Grants Management Certificate Program and the first from North Carolina.
Irene Lucas
Secretary, The Healing Tree Foundation
Irene Lucas is founder and President of Lucas Writes Educational Multimedia, Inc., a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to self-empower, protect and inform the developmental disability population; and to encourage self-beneficial, assertive behavior, informed and willing choices based on awareness of self-dignity and self-worth. Irene is also a writer, editor, and educational video producer, creating and presenting safety training workshops for those who serve people with developmental disabilities. In addition to producing educational videos, she presents workshops to teachers, students, and representatives from law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
Michelle Price

She is the secret internet weapon behind some of today's most successful NY Times best selling authors, influential bloggers, entrepreneurs and speakers - her clients have already been on Oprah, The Donny Deutsch Show, Larry King Live, blog for the Huffington Post, and have been written up in Fortune, Business Week, and many others.
Michelle is the creator of the Social Networking Boot Camp for Women Entrepreneurs (www.SocialNetworkingBootCampforWomen.com) and has created it's companion online community, The Social Networking SalonT where she inspires and empowers the women entrepreneurs in her network to use social media as a platform to leverage their natural ability to connect and then create sustainable wealth.
Stephen Peacock
Chief Development Officer
Stephen Peacock brings more than 20 years of nonprofit experience to our team as an effective leader, communicator, and successful fundraiser. During his career, he has served in fundraising leadership positions with regional, statewide, and national nonprofit organization benefiting children. Active in the community, he recently completed service on the Board of Directors of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), Maryland Chapter, currently serves on the mentoring committee of the Triangle AFP Chapter, and has been recruited to serve on the Board of Directors of The Mariposa School for Children with Autism in Cary, NC. Stephen is responsible for cultivating strategic alliances and building opportunities and value for our partners and major sponsors.
Katye Neal
Fundraising Coordinator
Kayte Neal has successfully raised funds and in-kind donations for several non-profit organizations. Kayte has always had a strong interest in charitable giving & human rights, & took an active role in Amnesty International as the New Member Coordinator during her college years. She began working to raise awareness and support for gastroschisis after her daughter was born with this life-threatening condition. Her passion and success in achieving her goals led to a lifetime commitment to support worthy nonprofit organizations. Katye is responsible for attracting new donors and sponsors, and for obtaining in-kind donations for the 365 acts of random kindness.
Meagan Spangler
Marketing Specialist
Meagan Spangler is a recent graduate of North Carolina State University's Communications program, in which she concentrated in public relations and minored in arts studies. She distinguished herself as a public relations intern with PRStreet, Inc., where she assisted with writing press releases, conducting media outreach, and planning special events.
Meagan also worked with MTM Music Management, where she provided efficient support in a fast-paced music marketing environment, including creating a press kit, updating website literature, and planning a major benefit. While studying abroad in France, she assisted in the production of a professional film, gaining hands-on experience with the filmmaking process and maintaining organization for the efficient shooting of scenes. Meagan will be responsible for filming CJ Scarlet's 365 daily random acts of kindness for use by the media and for the OMK Revolution video blog. |
